Sterilizing of medical devices is a vital part of the health ecosystem in hospitals , nursing homes and other health centres. Sterilization is the process by which killing all viable harmful microorganisms that include resistant spores with such certainty so that not more than one in a million microorganisms can survive. What is Ozone Sterilization?
Ozone is a trioxygen inorganic molecule that acts as a strong antimicrobial agent. Ozone sterilization is a method which uses the oxidizing antimicrobial property to disinfectant surfaces of medical equipment to free it from microorganisms. It is also used in industrial systems to sterilize water and air.
It is one of the most recent low sterilization processes. It has been effective in killing even the most resistant bacterium, Geobacillus stearothermophilus. Ozone sterilization is particularly useful in the sterilization of medical devices that cannot tolerate high heat and humidity of standard steam autoclaving like endoscopes.
How Does Ozone Sterilization work?
Ozone sterilizer effectively uses the distinct properties of ozone by producing it from medical grade oxygen that is available in hospitals. Electrical energy is applied to the oxygen molecules forcing it to split into atoms of oxygen that again combines with oxygen molecules to form ozone molecules. The ozone formed reacts with organic compounds by forming double carbon bonds. In this process , it not only tears the cell membrane apart but also kills the cell before converting to harmful oxygen molecules. The ozone molecules have a half-life of around 20 minutes under normal conditions, after which it again splits.
Benefits of Ozone Sterilization

4). Ozone leakage from ozone sterilizers can easily be detected due to its pungent smell.
5). The cycle time of ozone sterilization is shorter than Ethylene sterilization (EtO).
6). The cost per cycle of ozone sterilization is less expensive than that of EtO sterilization since oxygen is cheaper to get than Ethylene Oxide.
Ozone has been a useful disinfectant of drinking water, food and air. The realization of its useful antimicrobial properties inside the sterilizer has made it a viable alternative amongst low-temperature sterilizers. Adverse impacts of other low-temperature sterilization processes have resulted in increased interest in ozone sterilization due to its cost-effectiveness and better safety records.
